019. Tomato-covered surface
The car slowly enters a posh neighbourhood,
finally stopping at a neighbourhood parking lot. Su Yi Cheng stalls to get off
the car, and goes around the head of the car to open her side of the door.
It’s
only then that An Ran’s spirit slowly returns. Looking at him suspiciously, she
asks, “Where are we?”
Su Yi
Cheng laughs, grabs a brief case from the back seat, then draws his arm out to
lead the way to the exit.
“Where
are we going?” Not getting a reply, An Ran asks again.
Su Yi
Cheng laughs. He turns to look at her, and says, “Our home.”
While
An Ran was still struggling respond, Su Yi Cheng takes her hand and goes
straight up to the 10th floor. Upon entering, the entire room is
styled in cool colours, the room only consisting of black, white or grey. It’s
an obviously masculinized house. However, it’s not messy like a typical man
living alone. The entire room is extremely neat. There even seems to be a faint
scent of mint in the room.
Su Yi
Cheng let An Ran sit down on the sofa, while he goes into the kitchen and pours
a glass of juice for her. Then he turns to go to the bathroom. Today he had to
go on an inspection trip. Most of the time was spent inspecting the
construction of the site, so he was covered in dust.
An
Ran did not respond until an emotion came over her. She was somewhat annoyed
that she had let him bring her here, seated her on the sofa…She can even hear
the splashing of the water as he bathes himself in the bathroom. Suddenly
overcome with restless, she gets up.
When
Su Yi Cheng emerged from the bathroom again, he had already changed into his
pyjamas, a comfortable T-shirt and baggy pants. Half of his hair was hanging
down, which, at a glance, made him appear 10 years younger, like a dignified
university student.
Su Yi Cheng opened the refrigerator in the kitchen to get
some bread, and then poured himself a glass of juice. The itinerary today was completely
packed, so much that they could not attend to the lunch that the manager had
arranged for them. They just went straight ahead from place to place to
examine, and because he was in such a rush early morning, he did not eat. For
the entire evening he had hoped that he could return earlier, so when he was on
the road he did not even let Secretary Zhang stop. So right now, he is really
hungry.
He sits across An Ran, and tears the bread, the juice
following it down.
An Ran looks at him. Can’t help but be concerned, she asks,
“You still haven’t eaten yet?”
Su Yi Cheng nods, taking another bite, and says, “Yeah,
today’s itinerary was really packed.”
An Ran reaches out and grabs the bread from his hands.
Actually, just as she had finished this action she immediately regretted it,
but nevertheless, she braced herself and said, “Stop eating this. Eating these
ice-cold stuff on an empty stomach isn’t good for your stomach.”
Su Yi Cheng raises his eyebrows, smiles, and asks, “Then what
should I eat?”
“Something hot.” An Ran said, her cheeks involuntarily heats
up, flushed.
Su Yi Cheng laughs as he looks at her. “I haven’t been home
the entire day.”
An Ran went silent for a moment. “You have noodles at
home?”
Su Yi Cheng nods. “Yeah.”
“Then I’ll make you some noodles?” An Ran looks at him, her
tone aiming for his opinion.
“Sure.” Su Yi Cheng happily agrees as he puts on a big smile.
An Ran eyes him, her face reddened from laughing, turns and
walks over to the kitchen. At the kitchen, she sees all sorts of pots and pans
and utensils, and realizes that she’s not at home, therefore she doesn’t know
where the noodles are. Helplessly, she turns her head, only to see that he,
who knows when, was already sitting at the bar counter that connected the
kitchen and the living room. One hand holding up his head, he wears his
‘off-of-work’ smile as he looks at her.
“That… Where are your noodles?” An Ran asks shyly.
“It’s in the cupboard on the left.” Su Yi Cheng replies
casually. He wears a smile on his face, appearing to be in a good mood.
An Ran nods, and takes the noodles from the cupboard. She
fills the pot with water, and waits for it to boil. In that period, An Ran
turns to open the fridge, only to see that inside such a big fridge, contains
only a few tomatoes and eggs, and some beer and beverages.
An Ran takes the tomatoes and eggs. She washes the tomatoes
and cuts it into cubes, then beats the eggs. After that, she turns on another
stove, and begins to stir-fry.
Su Yi Cheng watches all of her movements with a smile, seeing
how earnest and concentrated she is. He suddenly feels something he couldn’t
explain, that kind of strange feeling.
The cellphone placed on his coffee table begins to ring. It
was An Ran’s. Su Yi Cheng gets up to retrieve the phone, the screen displays
the call coming from home. It must be the home phone.
“Who is it?” An Ran spreads the noodles in the pot. After
that, she pours the stir-fried tomatoes onto the noodles, and turns around to
ask.
“It’s probably from home.” Su Yi Cheng says, and hands the
phone over to her.
An Ran nods, but she doesn’t answer it immediately. “The
noodle’s ready, you, you can take it yourself.” She then carries the phone into
the living room after she finished speaking.
“Hello, mom.” An Ran answers. She just remembered that she
had hurriedly left this afternoon, not telling her mother what was going on.
Thinking of that, if she were at home and seeing how she’s staying out so late,
she would get worried.
“An Ran, did something happen? It’s so late and you’re not
coming back?” Lin Xiao Fen asks anxiously.
“It’s nothing, just something related to work. I’ll be home
in a bit.” Since An Ran hasn’t told her of the accident at work, she didn’t
think that her mother would be worried about her.
“Ok, then you should come home soon.” Lin Xiao Fen doesn’t
doubt her, and just urges these few words, then hangs up.
She turns her head, only to see that Su Yi Cheng is already
sitting on the counter. Hearing that she has finished her phone call, he turns
his body to face her and looks at her, smiling. “It’s really good.”
An Ran smiles shyly. Actually she already knows that her
cooking, at best, is ordinary. It’s not good, but at least it’s not hard to
swallow down. Since she usually eats home-cooked meals, and whenever she comes
home her mother always makes delicious food, she doesn’t have a lot of
opportunity to use the kitchen herself. As a result, her cooking skill is just
passable.
“Eat slowly, I’m going to go first.” An Ran says to him. She
picks up her bag from the sofa and begins to leave.
“Wait, An Ran.” Su Yi Cheng calls out to her. He points at
her pot of noodles, and says, “Can you wait until I finish these noodles? At
least let me send you home.”
“No, no it’s okay, don’t wanna inconvenience you. I can go
back myself.” An Ran quickly refused. Actually both of them are still
unfamiliar with each other, she does not want to trouble him. She lifts her arm
and looks at the time. “It’s 8 o clock now, not that late. I can go home
myself.”
Hearing that, Su Yi Cheng puts down his chopsticks, gets up
and walks towards her.
An Ran, confused, doesn’t understand what he’s thinking of
doing.
“You said you’re going home?” Su Yi Cheng looks at her and
asks with determination.
An Ran nods her head. Well yeah, going home!
Su Yi Cheng frowns,
and reaches out his hand to her. “Give me your phone.”
An Ran is confused, yet she still goes through her bag and
takes out her phone, handing it over to him. “What are you doing?”
Su Yi Cheng doesn’t say anything, only smiles, as he brings
up the call history, and dials the most recent call.
The call was connected immediately. It hadn’t even rung twice
when it was picked up. “Hello?”
“Mom? This is Yi
Cheng.” Su Yi Cheng says something to the phone, his face wearing a big smile
as he looks at An Ran.
