First Marriage Then Love 《先婚厚爱》Chapter 19 Translation

019. Tomato-covered surface

The car slowly enters a posh neighbourhood, finally stopping at a neighbourhood parking lot. Su Yi Cheng stalls to get off the car, and goes around the head of the car to open her side of the door.

It’s only then that An Ran’s spirit slowly returns. Looking at him suspiciously, she asks, “Where are we?”

Su Yi Cheng laughs, grabs a brief case from the back seat, then draws his arm out to lead the way to the exit.

“Where are we going?” Not getting a reply, An Ran asks again.

Su Yi Cheng laughs. He turns to look at her, and says, “Our home.”

While An Ran was still struggling respond, Su Yi Cheng takes her hand and goes straight up to the 10th floor. Upon entering, the entire room is styled in cool colours, the room only consisting of black, white or grey. It’s an obviously masculinized house. However, it’s not messy like a typical man living alone. The entire room is extremely neat. There even seems to be a faint scent of mint in the room.

Su Yi Cheng let An Ran sit down on the sofa, while he goes into the kitchen and pours a glass of juice for her. Then he turns to go to the bathroom. Today he had to go on an inspection trip. Most of the time was spent inspecting the construction of the site, so he was covered in dust.

An Ran did not respond until an emotion came over her. She was somewhat annoyed that she had let him bring her here, seated her on the sofa…She can even hear the splashing of the water as he bathes himself in the bathroom. Suddenly overcome with restless, she gets up.

When Su Yi Cheng emerged from the bathroom again, he had already changed into his pyjamas, a comfortable T-shirt and baggy pants. Half of his hair was hanging down, which, at a glance, made him appear 10 years younger, like a dignified university student.

Su Yi Cheng opened the refrigerator in the kitchen to get some bread, and then poured himself a glass of juice. The itinerary today was completely packed, so much that they could not attend to the lunch that the manager had arranged for them. They just went straight ahead from place to place to examine, and because he was in such a rush early morning, he did not eat. For the entire evening he had hoped that he could return earlier, so when he was on the road he did not even let Secretary Zhang stop. So right now, he is really hungry.

He sits across An Ran, and tears the bread, the juice following it down.

An Ran looks at him. Can’t help but be concerned, she asks, “You still haven’t eaten yet?”

Su Yi Cheng nods, taking another bite, and says, “Yeah, today’s itinerary was really packed.”

An Ran reaches out and grabs the bread from his hands. Actually, just as she had finished this action she immediately regretted it, but nevertheless, she braced herself and said, “Stop eating this. Eating these ice-cold stuff on an empty stomach isn’t good for your stomach.”

Su Yi Cheng raises his eyebrows, smiles, and asks, “Then what should I eat?”

“Something hot.” An Ran said, her cheeks involuntarily heats up, flushed.

Su Yi Cheng laughs as he looks at her. “I haven’t been home the entire day.”

An Ran went silent for a moment. “You have noodles at home?”

Su Yi Cheng nods. “Yeah.”

“Then I’ll make you some noodles?” An Ran looks at him, her tone aiming for his opinion.

“Sure.” Su Yi Cheng happily agrees as he puts on a big smile.

An Ran eyes him, her face reddened from laughing, turns and walks over to the kitchen. At the kitchen, she sees all sorts of pots and pans and utensils, and realizes that she’s not at home, therefore she doesn’t know where the noodles are. Helplessly, she turns her head, only to see that he, who knows when, was already sitting at the bar counter that connected the kitchen and the living room. One hand holding up his head, he wears his ‘off-of-work’ smile as he looks at her.

“That… Where are your noodles?” An Ran asks shyly.

“It’s in the cupboard on the left.” Su Yi Cheng replies casually. He wears a smile on his face, appearing to be in a good mood.

An Ran nods, and takes the noodles from the cupboard. She fills the pot with water, and waits for it to boil. In that period, An Ran turns to open the fridge, only to see that inside such a big fridge, contains only a few tomatoes and eggs, and some beer and beverages.

An Ran takes the tomatoes and eggs. She washes the tomatoes and cuts it into cubes, then beats the eggs. After that, she turns on another stove, and begins to stir-fry.

Su Yi Cheng watches all of her movements with a smile, seeing how earnest and concentrated she is. He suddenly feels something he couldn’t explain, that kind of strange feeling.

The cellphone placed on his coffee table begins to ring. It was An Ran’s. Su Yi Cheng gets up to retrieve the phone, the screen displays the call coming from home. It must be the home phone.

“Who is it?” An Ran spreads the noodles in the pot. After that, she pours the stir-fried tomatoes onto the noodles, and turns around to ask.

“It’s probably from home.” Su Yi Cheng says, and hands the phone over to her.

An Ran nods, but she doesn’t answer it immediately. “The noodle’s ready, you, you can take it yourself.” She then carries the phone into the living room after she finished speaking.

“Hello, mom.” An Ran answers. She just remembered that she had hurriedly left this afternoon, not telling her mother what was going on. Thinking of that, if she were at home and seeing how she’s staying out so late, she would get worried.

“An Ran, did something happen? It’s so late and you’re not coming back?” Lin Xiao Fen asks anxiously.

“It’s nothing, just something related to work. I’ll be home in a bit.” Since An Ran hasn’t told her of the accident at work, she didn’t think that her mother would be worried about her.

“Ok, then you should come home soon.” Lin Xiao Fen doesn’t doubt her, and just urges these few words, then hangs up.

She turns her head, only to see that Su Yi Cheng is already sitting on the counter. Hearing that she has finished her phone call, he turns his body to face her and looks at her, smiling. “It’s really good.”

An Ran smiles shyly. Actually she already knows that her cooking, at best, is ordinary. It’s not good, but at least it’s not hard to swallow down. Since she usually eats home-cooked meals, and whenever she comes home her mother always makes delicious food, she doesn’t have a lot of opportunity to use the kitchen herself. As a result, her cooking skill is just passable.

“Eat slowly, I’m going to go first.” An Ran says to him. She picks up her bag from the sofa and begins to leave.

“Wait, An Ran.” Su Yi Cheng calls out to her. He points at her pot of noodles, and says, “Can you wait until I finish these noodles? At least let me send you home.”

“No, no it’s okay, don’t wanna inconvenience you. I can go back myself.” An Ran quickly refused. Actually both of them are still unfamiliar with each other, she does not want to trouble him. She lifts her arm and looks at the time. “It’s 8 o clock now, not that late. I can go home myself.”

Hearing that, Su Yi Cheng puts down his chopsticks, gets up and walks towards her.

An Ran, confused, doesn’t understand what he’s thinking of doing.

“You said you’re going home?” Su Yi Cheng looks at her and asks with determination.

An Ran nods her head. Well yeah, going home!

Su Yi Cheng frowns, and reaches out his hand to her. “Give me your phone.”

An Ran is confused, yet she still goes through her bag and takes out her phone, handing it over to him. “What are you doing?”

Su Yi Cheng doesn’t say anything, only smiles, as he brings up the call history, and dials the most recent call.

The call was connected immediately. It hadn’t even rung twice when it was picked up. “Hello?”

“Mom? This is Yi Cheng.” Su Yi Cheng says something to the phone, his face wearing a big smile as he looks at An Ran.

First Marriage Then Love 《先婚厚爱》Chapter 18 Translation

018. Accident

Lin Li hasn’t skinned An Ran yet, even though it’s as if she’s eaten the ocean, because they also did not know that YouRan Restaurant, unexpectedly, belonged to Su Yi Cheng’s little sister. As a result, with just a wave of a hand, Su Yi Jiao has excused their bill, and, furthermore, gave out orders to the staff saying that the next time An Ran comes, to excuse the bill. An Ran attempted to give the excuse that it was inconvenient, but Su Yi Jiao laughed, simply saying that among family, who would accept money to eat. An Ran laughed nervously, thinking to herself that she won’t come the next time.

The original plan, after they finished eating, was that she would go walk around the block with Lin Li, but how can one help oneself when YouRan’s gourmet food is just too delicious. One can only let Lin Li, this girl, eat enough to support herself. Immediately after eating she calls Cheng Xiang, so he can come pick her up.

Waiting for the both girls to seat themselves in Cheng Xiang’s car, right after closing the door, Lin Li begins to pull on An Ran’s hand and with a serious mood, says, “An, you’ve snatched yourself a very wealthy person!”

An Ran looks at her, and leans her head on the back of the seat, muttering a sigh, “I also have that feeling……” She can already see that Su Yi Cheng’s qualifications are pretty good, yet she didn’t dare think it was this good. Just a while ago, Su Yi Jiao had told her that Su Yi Cheng also involved in YouRan Restaurant. At the time he had also pitched in when she was just starting up the funds. An Ran did not ask any further. She doesn’t know why he had agreed to get married to her. Perhaps it is what he had said. He needed a wife, and she just happened to be suitable, that’s all.

Cheng Xiang sent An Ran home first, then turned back to head home. When An Ran returned home, only Lin Xiao Fen was at home, sitting on the sofa by herself. Gu Heng Wen teaches high school, and is also in charge of the class for college entrance exams. Even though it’s Saturday, they still want to attend class.

An Ran leaves her bag at a table, and calls out to her mom. But her mom does not respond, so she calls out again, and as before, she still does not respond. An Ran frowns, and walks over to her, only to see Lin Xiao Fen sitting there, dazed. In her hands, she holds a photograph, her eyes have no spirit as she looks ahead.

“Mom?” An Ran calls again, this time bringing Lin Xiao Fen back to earth. She sees that An Ran seems worried, and hastily hides her hands behind her back, as if she feared that she would see something.

“Ran—Ran Ran, you—you’re back!” Lin Xiao Fen watches what she says, as if she’s concealing something.

“Yeah.” An Ran nods, seeing her mother like this worried her. “Mom, are you okay?”

“Fine, I’m fine. Why wouldn’t I be, hehe.” Lin Xiao Fen laughs, forcing a smile to cover her mood. As if she feared that An Ran would ask more questions, she hurriedly gets up and says, “You haven’t eaten yet, right Ran Ran? Mother will go make something.”

An Ran checks her watch. It’s almost 2 o clock. She pulls on her mother’s hands. “Mom, I’ve already eaten. When I left this morning I told you that I’m going to go out for lunch with Lin Li, did you forget?”

Lin Xiao Fen blanked, immediately puts on a smile, and shakes her head. “Right, you did say that you were going to go with Lin Li for lunch when you were heading out. Look at me, mother is getting too old. Really useless.”

An Ran hugs her mother. “Of course not. Mother is exactly the same as 20 years ago, just as beautiful and just as young, not getting old at all.”

Lin Xiao Fen pats her daughter, and laughs. “You ah, you really know how to comfort me.”

An Ran laughs. She holds her mother for a little longer, then lets her go. “Mom, I will make something for you.”

Lin Xiao Fen nods her head. Seeing her daughter head towards the kitchen, she looks down at the picture in her hand. It’s an old picture that is losing its colour. The man in the photo is wearing a white shirt and glasses, elegant and graceful.

In the midst of accompanying Lin Xiao Fen during her meal, the construction site phoned in, saying that there was a situation. Someone on the construction site was injured by a chunk of cement that fell from above, and the person is already on his way to the hospital.

An Ran hurriedly grabbed her bag and headed out, her heart rate in disorder. Only when she went to the garage to get her car does she remember that it is at the company and she hasn’t brought it back home. She urgently ran to the street and blocked a car, and asked to go to the construction site. When she arrived at the site of the accident, she saw that the company’s director Huang De Xing has already arrived. He is an aged man, hair already balding, and with a beer belly. Honestly speaking, An Ran considers Huang De Xing as a teacher. After An Ran had graduated she interned at his company, so they have been working together for 6 years. And of course, over the past 6 years he has taught An Ran a lot.

An Ran takes a safety helmet and walks over to the director. “Director.”

Huang De Xing turns his head to see An Ran, then turns his body to face her. “I heard that a chunk of cement had suddenly fallen from above, and at that time a person had been passing by.”

An Ran looks up, only to see that 10 meters above, the balcony of the window sill is missing a big chunk. She looks at her feet, the ground crushed and in disorder. You can still see the bright red bloodstain on the ground.

“How’s the person?” An Ran asks. It really makes one dreadful, seeing how much blood was left behind.

Huang De Xing shakes his head, sighing. “Not good. The hospital just called now. They couldn’t save him. He died before they entered the OR.”

An Ran was speechless, the pit of her stomach has an indescribable sorrow.

“Whose draft had a problem?” An Ran asks. The blueprint of this neighbourhood garden was her best work. She had calculated each and every sector with precision. According this there shouldn’t be any problem.

“We will have to investigate the cause of this accident,” Huang De Xing says as he turns. “Go. Everything will have to be suspended until we get to the root of the accident.” After saying this, he doesn’t look at An Ran. He just walks away.

An Ran was the only person to remain at the site for a long time, until the sun had set. The horizon was gradually darkening. Only then does An Ran turn to leave the site.

She walks along the street alone, without purpose or direction, her mind unceasingly replaying the scene. Broken high building, the earth below crushed in, and the blood staining the earth. An Ran stood on the main road alone. She never once thought that her draft would smash a person.

The phone in her bag rings, but An Ran does not notice it. Apparently the other person was quite patient, as the phone continues to ring. At the third loop of the ringtone, An Ran finally answers.

“Where are you?” The voice on the other line, as before, is strange yet familiar, however this time the tone is somewhat impatient.

“Out.” An Ran cried.

“What happened?” Su Yi Cheng, keen, asks.

An Ran doesn’t say anything, just absentmindedly looks ahead. The streetlights flicker. The nights at Jiang city, compared to daytime, is absolutely beautiful.

Seeing that she doesn’t answer, Su Yi Cheng speaks again. “Give me the address, where you are at right now.”

An Ran scans the street, finally telling him the address.

Su Yi Cheng has been driving for half an hour already. He seemed to be in a difficult situation right now. The hair that is normally immaculately neat is now somewhat messy. He also looks a bit exhausted. Only his dark eyes, as always, has spirit.

“An Ran?” Su Yi Cheng gently calls her.

An Ran’s spirit returns. She looks at him, gets up, and replies, “Oh. You’re here.”

Su Yi Cheng nods. He leads her to the car, and politely buckles the seatbelt for her.

An Ran looks out the window, her gaze erratic, unfocused.

“What happened?” Su Yi Cheng asks worriedly, she looks like she isn’t in good condition.

After a while of silence, just as Su Yi Cheng gets the impression that she doesn’t want to talk, does she begin to speak, “This afternoon, at the construction site, a cement belonging to the balcony on the third floor suddenly fell, and crushed a person to death.”

“Is it a problem with the design?” Su Yi Cheng asks.

An Ran shakes her head. “I don’t know.”

Su Yi Cheng doesn’t ask any further, and simply starts the car to leave. He doesn’t say anything. She doesn’t ask either.

First Marriage Then Love 《先婚厚爱》Chapter 17 Translation

017. Su Yi Jiao

Lin Li is so evil, truly evil!

Seeing the dishes on the table, An Ran has unceasingly cursed silently.

And seeing that she is hastily layering each and every dish onto her plate, An Ran squeezes her purse, and with some bitterness in her voice, asks, “You* finished yet?”  *informally

Lin Li looks at her, proceeds to struggle with the gourmet food, and, in a rather good mood, replies, “I feel somewhat different now. Right now I’m eating two people’s worth of food, and I don’t even feel worried about eating so much!” As she says this, she puts a piece of tender fish meat in An Ran’s bowl, and without reserve, says, “Here, you can have some too. This restaurant’s steamed yellow croaker is Jiang city’s best.”

An Ran looks at piece of meat in her bowl, her stomach drops. She looked distressed, her purse also looks distressed, her credit card also looks very distressed!

As they say, grief and indignation can turn into appetite. She takes a few minutes to think about that shining white silver that will soon be leaving her. An Ran, coming to an understanding, picks up her chopsticks and goes to the offensive side.

Just as she resolved herself to eat, the cell phone in her bag begins to ring. The ringtone is a song of unknown name and an unknown musical instrument, the melody carrying a faintly sad tone.

An Ran rummages through her bag for her cell phone, and sees that it’s Su Yi Cheng’s number. An Ran glances at Lin Li, late in answering the call. In fact, she doesn’t know what she should talk about with him. Even though they’re husband and wife, they are, after all, not that familiar with each other.

“Who is it, why aren’t you answering the call?” Lin Li looks at her strangely, apparently seeing through her, and guesses, “Mr. Su?”

An Ran nods her head finally answering it. “Hello.”

“Are you busy right now? Am I bothering you?” Su Yi Cheng, on the other line, kindly asks, his voice was especially pleasant to hear.

“Um, no, no. Just eating right now.” An Ran replies honestly. She wanted to say something else, yet she doesn’t really know what else to say.

“Oh.” Su Yi Cheng answers understandingly, sounding somewhat exhausted. “Since early morning until now, I haven’t eaten yet.” That manner of speaking appears to gain a lot of sympathy from others, as it carries a hint of pity.

“Huh, why haven’t you eaten yet? Is the business trip really busy?” An Ran was of course concerned.

“Yes, quite busy.” Su Yi Cheng answers softly.

An Ran doesn’t know what else to say; she’s normally the passive one, trying to find a topic to talk about has never been her strength. Thus, the two just held their phone for a good while, silently. Just as An Ran decided to say that she will hang up, she sees a beautiful woman suddenly heading towards them, following the manager’s lead.

An Ran looks distractedly, almost forgetting that she still hasn’t said a thing to the phone.

The beautiful woman was led to her by Manager Zhang. She stops in front of her, and cautiously inspects An Ran, sizing her up. The corner of her mouth carries an indistinct smiling expression. An Ran frankly feels like she’s seen that smiling expression before, yet she can’t recall where.

“Mrs. Su, this person is our You Ran Restaurant Chief Su.” Manager Zhang introduces.

The beautiful woman looks her, and nods her head. Her speech has a bountiful appeal, as she says “Mrs. Su”, these two words. Then, looking at An Ran’s face, her smiling expression becomes more obvious.

An Ran looks at the woman in front of her, beautiful and tall. Her skin is pale, her wavy hair evens out the fringes that may not look mature, but on the contrary, carries a somewhat charming and adorable allure.

“An Ran? An Ran?” Su Yi Cheng, on the other line, calls out.

An Ran quicly comes back to earth, and answers, “Yeah, here, I’m here.”

“Are you out?” Su Yi Cheng asks, as he just heard Manager Zhang’s voice.

“Yeah, I’m eating with Lin Li at You Ran.” An Ran says honestly.

“Oh, okay. Give the phone to Yi Jiao.”

“Yi Jiao? Who’s Yi Jiao?” An Ran was confused. Who’s Yi Jiao? She clearly just said that she’s eating with Lin Li!

“Sister in law, is my older brother talking about me? I am Yi Jiao.” The beauty beside her smiles tenderly.

An Ran was shocked, even Lin Li sitting in front of her was shocked, unable to react to the situation.

“Just give it to her, I want to say a few things to her.” Su Yi Cheng on the other line says.

An Ran looks Su Yi Jiao who is beside her, not saying anything, and just dazedly nods her head, clearly forgetting that Su Yi Cheng isn’t here but on the other side of the phone, and thus, is unable to see her nod her head. She hands her phone to Su Yi Jiao.

Su Yi Jiao takes the phone as she excuses herself, and upon taking the phone, says, “Older brother, you truly are clairvoyant, or maybe somebody with extremely good hearing. Or perhaps I should say you have Guan Yin Pusa’s (Goddess of Mercy) pinch of miracle. I just let Manager Zhang bring me to meet sister in law, and already, you found out.”

Under the table, Lin Li stretches her leg to kick An Ran, looking at her, her expression asking to get-to-the-bottom-of-the-matter and what-the-hell-is-going-on.

An Ran creases her brows, shaking her head. She’s just as clueless as her right now.

Also not knowing what Su Yi Cheng is saying right now, she can only hear Su Yi Jiao laugh lovingly and saying, “Don’t worry, I haven’t frightened sister in law yet. I also just got here, and heard Manager Zhang say that the Flower pavilion guest from yesterday is also here today, so I just came over to have a look-see. However, brother, this speed is fast enough. When I went home yesterday I haven’t heard Mom chatting away about your marriage, and today I have a sister-in-law.”

An Ran listens beside her, her cheeks becoming red. She also didn’t expect it to be this fast, yesterday she was also an unmarried woman, and today she’s already risen through the ranks of a married woman, on the same level as Lin Li.

“Alright, alright, she’s my sister-in-law, how else should I treat her? I just wanted to see your precious.” Su Yi Jiao says, turning her head to look at An Ran, meeting her eyes, and gives her a charming wink.

An Ran smiles embarrassingly, at a complete loss.

“Alright, you can go talk to mom yourself, I definitely won’t blab.” She says as she nods, and then she smiles lovingly as she returns the cellphone to An Ran. “My brother says he wants to say some sweet nothings to sister-in-law.”

An Ran’s skin weakens, her faces turns into a deep red as she takes the cellphone. “Hello.”

“Did Yi Jiao scare you?” Su Yi Cheng’s voice, as before, is warm and pleasant to hear.

An Ran looks at the Su Yi Jiao who is smiling from ear to ear, and shakes her head. “No, not at all.”

“She’s my little sister, she’s also You Ran’s boss. She heard that you were here, so she got curious and came over to take a look, no malice.” Su Yi Cheng explains.

“Okay, I know.” She already heard what Su Yi Jiao just said.

“I’ll be back in the evening, if I get back early I’ll call you. We should talk.” Su Yi Cheng says.

“Okay, sounds good.” An Ran nods, they really need to have a good talk.

Hanging up, she turns her head and sees that Su Yi Jiao still hasn’t left, smiling as she looks at An Ran and says, “Sister-in-law, what kind of sweet nothings has my brother said to you?”

“Uh..I—it’s nothing.” An Ran is flustered, where and what are the sweet nothings!

“Never mind, you don’t have to tell me the sweet speech and honeyed words that goes between you two.” Su Yi Jiao says somewhat pointedly, the corner of her mouth smiles ambiguously.

“Re—really! There isn’t!” An Ran explains, itching to vow a guarantee.

Su Yi Jiao laughs, but also not saying anything more. She turns to look at Lin Li, nods at her, and also looks at the dishes on the table. “Sister-in-law, our kitchen today is also featuring a new dish, I’ll have them give you some so you can try.” As she says this, she turns towards the kitchen and heads there.

---END OF CHAPTER---

Oh, Manager Zhang, impeccable timing, as always lol. Su Yi Jiao, I'm glad she's not the harsh sis-in-law. Phew! Dodged that bullet, An Ran. Enjoy~
