First Marriage Then Love 《先婚厚爱》Chapter 27 Translation

027. Health products

In the car, Su Yi Cheng turns on the music, putting on a slow and gentle piano tune. Yi Jiao gave the CD to him. You Ran Restaurant is always replacing their music every few days. As a result, with so many discs leftover, Yi Jiao would sometimes give him a few disks to take home. Actually, he normally doesn’t listen to music that much, but seeing that today a certain person’s mood wasn’t that good, so he was thinking that putting on a little bit of music would ease the tension, and the certain somebody in Su Yi Cheng’s eyes isn’t just anyone, but the An Ran who had turned her head to look out the window, ever since they got on the car.

“An Ran.” Su Yi Cheng was concentrated on looking ahead of the car, softly calling her.

An Ran turns her head back to look at him, and waits for him to continue speaking.

Su Yi Cheng doesn’t say anything right away. He parks the car in front of a nutrition shop, cuts the engine, turns his head to face An Ran and says, “Let’s get out and buy some stuff.”

“What are we buying?” An Ran was puzzled.

Su Yi Cheng doesn’t answer, and just opens the door to get out, then winds around and opens the door to An Ran’s side, looking at her and smiling as he extends his hand.

An Ran’s face faintly reddens, thinking that ever since the day she knew him up until now, even though it hasn’t been long, but she has sat in this car enough times, yet every time she gets on the car or gets off he would open the door for her. The gentleman’s elegance truly has reached its peak. Opposite to its intended effect, being like that made her a bit embarrassed.

Even though she was embarrassed, An Ran, red-faced, still took his hand. She raises her head to look at the shop before her, turns her head and asks, “You want to buy health stuff?”

Su Yi Cheng nods, smiling as he says, “Technically today is a formal visit to your family, how could I come empty-handed.”

“Uh, actually my parents don’t really care about that stuff.” What they care about most is whether or not she would be happy, that she has always known.

“Yeah, I know mom and dad aren’t those kind of people, but some etiquette should still be carried out. I want to leave them with the best impression.” Su Yi Cheng was leading with her hand into the shop, walks beside her, saying, “Actually buying these things isn’t just etiquette. I really like them, so I want them to grow old in the best of health. Perhaps before they were just your parents, but now, they’re also my parents, so I also want to be concerned and care for their health.

An Ran was moved. She turns her head to look at his side profile. This man’s attentiveness made her feel less*. She suddenly was glad about that day’s mishap, suddenly glad and that she was married to him, and not the previous Lin An Jie, and not that Mu-Feng-that-has-no-chance. She doesn't know how their marriage would pan out, and how he will treat her, but she was glad that he has enough respect and thinks about her parents.

*[T/N: as in feeling like you’re not as good as the other person]

Sensing her stare, Su Yi Cheng stopped his tracks, turns his head to look at her, and smiles as he asks, “What’s up? Do I have something on my face?”

An Ran shakes her head, turns her head as she is wearing a smile, not looking at him. She only says, “My mom’s blood sugar is a bit high, and my dad has high blood pressure.”

Su Yi Cheng smiles, “Then I know what to buy.” Then he pulls her hand towards the shelf and takes a few boxes of health products for blood sugar and high blood pressure, not only taking one but two of each, and also goes to another shelf and takes a box for diabetes. Then, carrying these, he goes to the checkout counter.

An Ran, seeing in his hands a variety of big and small boxes, quickly says, “Why are you buying this much, one is enough. And this, this, I saw the ad on TV that this is for diabetes, my parents don’t have diabetes, so you don’t need this.”

“Yeah, I know. This is for grandpa.” Su Yi Cheng answers while laughing.

“Grandpa……”An Ran responds slowly, and takes a while until she realizes that the grandpa he was referring to was his. She blushes a bit, reaches out and takes the box in his hands, saying, “Then, then I’ll pay for this one.” He wants to be filial then she also wants to be filial. According to etiquette, this ought to be covered by her.

Su Yi Cheng smiles because of her action, and doesn’t say anything.

When they got to the checkout counter, the cashier asks if they want to pay together. Not waiting for An Ran to speak, Su Yi Cheng had already taken the health product in her hands, hands over his card, and nods. “Together.”

They carry the bags containing the health products and put them into the trunk of his car. She returns to the passenger seat, and when Su Yi Cheng was about to start the car to leave, An Ran grabs her bag and secretly takes out her wallet, then takes out a few sheets of big red paper bills and hands it over to him, her eyes directly looking at him, and not saying anything.

Su Yi Cheng laughs and raises his eyebrows, and asks, “What are you doing?”

“We’ve agreed that I would cover that.” She was referring to the health products that he just bought for parents and grandpa.

Su Yi Cheng, seeing that she was a bit stubborn, gives her a big smile, extends his hands but not accepting the big bills in her hands, but rather wraps around her tiny hands and closes it tightly, pulls it down and rests it on his leg. He looks at her and asks, “An Ran, are you always so divisive with people?”

An Ran doesn’t understand, wrinkles her brows and looks at him.

Su Yi Cheng smiles, looks down to play with her small hands for a while. Then he finally looks up and asks, “An Ran, what would you call our relationship right now?”

An Ran seemed a bit shy and blushed, but this time she doesn’t avoid the question. She looks down, doesn’t look at him, saying in a low voice, “Husband and wife.”

“Right, so you are my wife, I am your husband, then must we be so clear in dividing parts?” Su Yi Cheng asks again.

“But I, I also want to be filial to my parents and grandpa, or else, or else what would I turn into.” An Ran replies, her tone and expression a bit shy and uneasy.

She knows how to be giving, with him being that way towards her parents, naturally she would also return the same feelings to his relatives as she would her own.

“To show filial respect isn’t about who buys what, who pays. The main thing is the intention, as long as you have the mind that’s enough. Things don’t have feelings, people are the ones that have feelings. If you have the intention, mom and dad and grandpa, they would naturally receive those feelings.”

“Then, then you….” An Ran thinks of something to say, but was interrupted by him.

“We’re husband and wife, I am your husband, supporting family and spending money are a matter of course, there’s no need to divide into you or me, isn’t that so?”

An Ran stares at him for a while, finally having nothing to say. He already ended the discussion, whatever else she has to say, and she also believes that she has a clumsy mouth, so it’s set that she wouldn’t win over him. At last, she could only take the big bills and put it into her wallet again. But she still couldn’t accept it, and even though she couldn’t accept she can only mutter at the side, “Obviously this is just male chauvinism.”

Hearing that, Su Yi Cheng let out a big laugh, but also not refuting it. He just simply starts the car and heads to the direction of the Gu household.

  4. If I have a father like him , my life would be happy and blessed. Honestly in any man I find this very important. Seeing my mom suffer daily with this thoughtfulness of ml lacking , my family is ruined. Though my mom and dad are together , my mom and I are always upset . The pressure of being successful and treat my family is my ultimate goal. I lack fatherly care but sometimes I read stuff on internet and rarely these novels. Thanks for the author in this blog to make me feel emotions .
