049. Social niceties/ dinner party


In the office, An Ran was concentrated on drawing the blueprint for the city hall building. It was afternoon, and even though a draft is still a draft, but she has always been able to see a little bit of progress.

An Ran grabs a pen and examines the paper seriously, then suddenly takes an eraser and wipes the diagram that she had just drawn. Then she takes the ruler and once again measures and draws, doing this repeatedly until she was satisfied, nodding her head. Just as she was about to draw another thing, someone knocks on her office door. She raises her head, only to see Xiao xiao, with her perfect makeup, and her hair made up into a wavy style, all of which was completed with an outfit, apparently changing her look to a different one since the meeting this morning. An Ran sometimes doesn't really get it. They all work together, in the same office, doing the same work. Where does she get that much time to fix herself, furthermore change her makeup according to the occasion, changing into different clothes and different bags. She’s very attentive to her lifestyle, but she herself feels that it must be very tiring.

“Alright, the director asked me to tell you that it’s almost time.” Xiao xiao says at the door with a smirk. She can’t tell if it’s a smile or not.

An Ran looks at the time on the computer screen, turns to look out the window to see the dark sky. She then sighs thinking that time is really going by too quickly.

She nods at Xiao xiao, tidies up and says to her, “Ok, I’ll be there soon. Where did the director say it was at, I can drive there myself.” Xiao xiao looks at her, only smiles and asks, “Don’t you wanna fix yourself up in the washroom first?”

Only then does An Ran realize that she had exhausted herself designing, and while she designs she has a habit of scratching her head. Even with her hair tied up it must be a mess right now. She looks at the time, puts the blueprints aside first, takes out her makeup bag and quickly runs to the washroom, passing by Xiao xiao, not forgetting to say, “You can just give me the address, I can get there myself.”

Xiao xiao raises her eyebrows, and says, “YouRan restaurant.”

An Ran pauses, her thoughts couldn’t help but bitterly cry. Why does it have to be ‘YouRan restaurant’, it’s such a big city, don’t tell me that there’s no other place to eat?

Seeing her frown, Xiao xiao asks in disdain, “What’s up, you don’t like that place?”

“No.” An Ran chuckles, shaking her head. She can only pray that she doesn’t bump into Su Yi Jiao.

Xiao xiao also doesn’t say anything, only looking at her with her brows raised.

An Ran avoids her gaze, and only says, “You don’t need to wait for me, I’ll be down in a minute.” After saying that she directly goes to the washroom.

Xiao xiao watches her figure disappear into the corner, then turns to look at the blueprints on the desk. She raises her brow, her gaze has a little shine to it.

In the washroom An Ran simply combs her hair, then dabs a bit of powder on her face. By the time she got back to her office Xiao xiao was already gone. She puts away some of her work from before, then grabs her briefcase, and the cellphone on her desk, and leaves the office.

Rushing through the short time to get to the parking lot from the office, An Ran’s eyes are only fixed on the cellphone in her hand, feeling that something’s wrong, but she doesn’t know what is it. Afterwards when An Ran was sitting in her car, she then recalls that today Su Yi Cheng hadn’t given her a call, and hasn’t said whether or not he would pick her up. Just as she was about to start the car to leave, she then recalls that Su Yi Cheng had mentioned during breakfast that he would be away for an inspection today, and that he’d probably be home a little late today, so he won’t be able to pick her up, and she can drive herself back home.

The car’s engine rumbles faintly. An Ran stares at her cellphone for a while, a little out of it. Then the phone in her hand sudden starts to ring. It was a call from Xiao xiao. Frightened from it, An Ran quickly answers it, not speaking right away, only hearing Xiao xiao ask, “An Ran, are you out yet, the director and I are already on the way. Wait at the 2nd floor house number 208. Get here soon, officer Tong is almost here, so don’t hold us up.”

“Ok, I got it.” An Ran answers, then hangs up. Then she looks at her phone and couldn’t help but shake her head, forcing herself to smile. How long as it been, she unexpectedly is used to getting that man’s call everyday, even that considerate picking up and dropping off.

Habits, they really are a scary thing.


When An Ran had arrived there, she luckily ran into Manager Zhang. Due to Su Yi Jiao’s earlier instructions, once Manager Zhang saw An Ran he greeted her passionately, his face beamed as he asked if she had reserved a table yet, whether or not she has friends coming and so on and so forth, asking until An Ran was getting overwhelmed, so in a hurry she said that she has work matters, and that she was with her company for a business dinner with an official, she shouldn’t stick around to chat too long, seizes the time and hurriedly runs up the stairs. When she knocked on the door she only saw Xiao xiao and Huang De Xing sitting at the edges of the table, Xiao xiao’s wavy hair in disarray. Her face was also a bit red, her lip gloss was a bit off. And the Huang De Xing beside her sat there honourably, checking his cellphone. Seeing An Ran come in, he simply nods at her, not really saying anything. And Xiao xiao suddenly gets up to leave, saying that she has an upset stomach. She then grabs her bags and immediately goes to the washroom.

An Ran senses that something was off, but all in all it was none of her business, she doesn’t have the seniority to give speech, so she simply bows her head and examines the beautiful, delicate tablecloth.

That evening, Bureau chief Tong that Huang De Xing had invited enters before Xiao xiao. To An Ran’s surprise this Bureau chief Tong was none other than the man from the other time, furthermore he was somehow acquainted with her mother.

Tong Wen Hai also recognizes An Ran. He remembers her, firstly because she is Su Yi Cheng’s wife, and secondly because she is Lin Xiao Fen’s daughter. Regardless of their status, she is a person he can not ignore.

“You…..” Tong Wen Hai was about to say something, but was interrupted by Huang De Xing getting up behind up.

“Chief Tong, it’s been while yet you still look dashing as ever, ha.” Huang De Xing laughs and walks over to Tong Wen Hai.

Tong Wen Hai comes back to earth, looks at Huang De Xing, and only smiles as he says, “Director Huang is such a joker.”

“You flatter me. It’s Chief Tong that’s too modest.” Huang De Xing says, then turns to An Ran beside him, “An Ran, this person is the new chief of city construction, Bureau Chief Tong. You should serve a few drinks to Chief Tong.”

An Ran smiles, nods at Chief Tong, and greets, “Nice to meet you Chief Tong.”

Tong Wen Hai nods, looking at her with a complex expression. Then the door behind him was pushed open, Xiao xiao was with a person cracking jokes as she enters. Along with An Ran they clearly see the man entering the room with Xiao xiao. Their eyes widen; they were surprised and shocked.
