060. Strange provocation
On Monday, An Ran was in the office rushing herself to finish the blueprints to the city hall building. The cellphone on her desk didn’t give any warning as it started to ring, scaring An Ran out of her concentrated state. She pats herself over her chest.
She grabs the cellphone. It was an unfamiliar number. She hesitated, but still answered.
“Hello?” An Ran used her shoulder to hold the phone in place, while she went back to working on her blueprint. The design was due on Wednesday, and it was already Monday. The blueprint was only a third of the way complete, so she really needs to push herself for the next few days.
“Ms. Gu?” A pleasant female’s voice starts speaking. The voice was gentle, and especially soft. Listening to it makes one feel at ease.
An Ran stops her pen, and puts it aside. She takes the phone back into her hands again, and looks at the screen. She’s certain that she doesn’t know this number, so she speaks into the phone, “And you are?”
The person on the other line chuckles, “Hehe, you don’t know me. But I know you. Ms. Gu, are you interested in having coffee with me?”
Hearing her words An Ran frowns even more. She’s not used to going out for coffee with strangers, “I’m sorry, I don't go for coffee with strangers.” Sitting together with an unfamiliar person and having coffee, what kind of situation is that?
“Perhaps Ms. Gu may not know who I am, but I believe that you definitely know who my husband is.” The person on the other lines says.
An Ran doesn’t crease her brow. Listening to her words made her even more suspicious, “I don’t quite get what you’re trying to say.”
“Mo Fei.” The person on the other line spits out those two words. Then she laughs delicately, and says, “Mo Fei is my husband. I am Tong Xiaojie.”
An Ran stiffens. She never would have thought that it would be Tong Xiaojie. She actually does know her. Ever since the start of university, she was beautiful, and she was the school’s beauty. She majored in the arts, and embodied a unique artistic personality, very pretty. When they were in school she liked to wear white clothing, appearing ethereal, as if she wasn’t from earth. Because she was so devastatingly beautiful, and came from a distinguished family, during their time in school, her pursuers were always abundant. They weren’t disruptive, but throughout their four years, she has never heard of her getting into a relationship. It didn’t matter if the men that went after her were handsome, or if they were rich, she rejected them all. Throughout the four years, she has never heard of her even going out with a male student.
In fact, about these matters of popular students in school, An Ran has also heard of it, even though she has never talked to them. The reason she knows of her, and has a deep impression of her, is entirely because of Mo Fei. The day before their graduation, the school was suddenly talking about how Tong Xiaojie and a student from the architecture department had walked closely together, and that one person even saw that they were holding hands as they entered the school gates, cheerful and lively. At that time An Ran was busy with her internship, so she never cared about these rumours. During that time, because her internship was related to her studies, she wasn’t able to see Mo Fei very much. When everyone had confirmed that the guy in the rumour was indeed architect major’s Mo Fei, they had already established their relationship as boyfriend and girlfriend. When An Ran had sought out Mo Fei to question him, Mo Fei didn’t say anything. He could only bow his head to her and apologize.
When that happened An Ran could only feel that it was inconceivable, and even found it ridiculous. They loved each other for 4 years, and her graduation gift was a break up. Not only did he two-time her, all that talk about his dreams as he held her, saying that life is but a fleeting horizon, was distant and fake. She asked for an explanation, and he could only force a smile, not even saying a word. They were just sitting at a coffee shop near campus for the entire afternoon, not one word was even exchanged. In the end An Ran could only laugh bitterly and turn around, but the moment she turned, tears had started to pour. Walking home from school, for an hour during that journey, her tears never stopped. When she arrived home her mother had asked in concern about what had happened, as it was obvious that she was feeling awfully wronged, but she wasn’t able to say a word. She could only weep and lock herself in her room, as her parents were calling her, but she didn’t let either of them in.
In the end, the day before their commencement, she had heard from a classmate that Mo Fei had gone abroad to study, and left with Tong Xiaojie, to France. Along with this news, Mo Fei had left behind a letter. In it contained everything that they had shared. His penmanship was delicate, much more detailed than what An Ran was used to. Aside from the little details of their time spent together, he also wrote about his ambitions. He wanted success, longed for success, and this society is one that is only beneficial to certain people's interest, where abilities will always be behind privilege. He said he didn’t love Tong Xiaojie, but he couldn’t reject her, because he longs for success, and the privilege that came with Tong Xiaojie, is exactly the kind that he was longing for. For that reason, he betrayed their love. Everything was a helpless act, yet was also dreadful.
“Ms. Gu? Are you still there?” Not getting an answer, Tong Xiaojie probes a call.
An Ran then comes back from her memories, and unconsciously tightens her grip on her phone, saying, “Yes.”
“Then do you want to meet me?” Tong Xiaojie asks, her tone still excessively pleasant.
An Ran closes her eyes, firmly declining, “I don’t see the need. I do know Mo Fei, but that’s only because we were schoolmates, that’s all.”
“Hehe.” Tong Xiaojie chuckles. “Someone sent me an interesting picture, and also attached your number to it.”
“Picture? What picture?” An Ran was puzzled, where did this picture come from? And who sent it?
“How about this, Ms. Gu, I think that we should meet. I don’t care what your intentions are towards Mo Fei, I still have something to say to you. Of course, before that, I think I owe you an apology. Because of my meddling, you and Mo Fei ended your relationship. For that, I’m sorry.”
“There’s no need for that. If you really have something to say, then you can just say it over the phone.” An Ran declines again. She doesn’t want to bring up her and Mo Fei again, from now on, she has her own life.
“Are you scared, Ms. Gu?” She chuckles, and says, “I don’t bite. What do you have to worry about, Ms. Gu. It’s just a cup of coffee.”
“I just am not used to going out with someone I don’t know, someone I’m not comfortable with, and drinking tea with them to chat.” An Ran says simply, not leaving any margin for error.
“Hehe.” Tong Xiaojie chuckles, and only says, “It actually isn’t anything, I just wanted to call Ms. Gu out just to say one thing: Regarding Mo Fei, I’m not going to let him go.”
An Ran has no interest in what she wants to say, and what her intentions were, she already had idea of what it was from the start, “Your marriage, has nothing to do with me.”
“Ah ha, I just want Ms. Gu to remember my words today.” Tong Xiaojie says, her tone becoming cold instantly.
“Then I ask Ms. Tong that you take good care of your own man, I don’t want to be disturbed.” An Ran’s voice also turns pointed. Now what does it look like, it looks as if she was the one who is wrecking havoc to their marriage.
Tong Xiaojie coldly says, “Thanks for reminding me, Ms. Gu. I will.” After speaking, she simply ends the call.
An Ran, feeling indignant, throws her phone on the desk, what the hell is this!
