First Marriage Then Love 《先婚厚爱》Chapter 53 Translation

053. The entire night

On the road An Ran just has her head turned, looking out the window. Her eyes were lifeless, unfocused.

Su Yi Cheng takes a glance at her, but doesn’t say anything. He takes his free hand and reaches out to her’s, holding it tightly. What had happened this evening was unexpected for him, but it also allowed him to understand one thing: About this marriage, it wasn’t that she couldn’t find someone who was suitable for her. It because, in her heart, she was waiting for someone for six years. Ultimately, her heart couldn’t wait anymore, and right at that time, she had met him.

He reckons that if she hadn’t gotten the wrong address that day, it would be with someone else, and perhaps she would be some other man’s wife right now. Thinking along those lines, Su Yi Cheng felt a little depressed, a feeling he can’t really describe. He squeezes her hand, an action that he wasn’t even consciously doing.

An Ran let out a muffled yelp, turns her head, and looks at him.

Realizing that he was hurting her, Su Yi Cheng was surprised that he had forgotten his manners (T/N: or self-control), at the same time he smiles at her apologetically, and rubs her small hand with his large palm. He smiles abashedly, and says, “Are you tired? If you are you can just lean back and sleep for a bit, I’ll wake you up when we’re there.”

An Ran stares at him. A while later, she nods her head. She looks at the back of her seat and slowly closes her eyes.

Su Yi Cheng adjusts her seat until it was good, so that she can lie down comfortably.

The ride was smooth. An Ran was leaning back, her body was covered with Su Yi Cheng’s coat. Her breathing, was shallow.

The car slowly enters the neighbourhood’s underground lot. Su Yi Cheng then puts the car out and watches An Ran beside him, leaning back against the seat with her eyes closed. He knows that she isn't sleeping at all. Although her breathing was even, but her quivering eyebrows and lashes exposed her.

Su Yi Cheng looks at her peacefully for a while, ultimately not waking her up at all. He opens the door, walks around the car, opens her side and carries her out. Then he carries her into the elevator, and into their home. Finally, he carries her into the bedroom, and puts her down onto the bed.

The entire way, An Ran continued to pretend to be asleep, and Su Yi Cheng continued to go along with her. He hugs her, treating her as if she really were asleep. He sits on the bedside and looks at the messy bangs on her forehead. He reaches out to brush it aside, exposing her pretty eyebrows. He gently rubs it, smoothing down the creases that came up because of her frown. Then he gets up to go to the bathroom. When Su Yi Cheng emerges from the bathroom with a warm towel, he sees that she still has her eyes closed, but with some tears at the corner of her eyes. He foolishly looks at those tear stains. He has this kind of indescribable feeling.

Still not waking her up, he unfolds his towel and wipes the tears from her eyes, wipes the dust and exhaustion. Then he goes back into the bathroom, and gets another towel. He takes her hand, wiping every single finger until they were clean.

An Ran’s eyebrows and lashes shiver, even her fingers couldn’t help but move. Su Yi cheng looks up at her for a while, yet she still has her eyes closed. He doesn’t say anything, takes her other hand, and does the same to that hand.

When Su Yi Cheng got up to put the towel back, Su Yi Jiao's call came in. He turns to look at her, and takes the call out of the bedroom.

At the same time that he left An Ran opens her eyes, and sees his figure retreating from the room, one hand holding the door, but because he wasn’t using a lot of strength, the door didn’t make a sound.

She can clearly hear him on the phone, and can guess that it was Su Yi Jiao on the other line. According to his responses, she can also guess what they were talking about. It’s probably about what had happened outside of YouRan restaurant.

An Ran doesn’t know how Su Yi Cheng responded to that, because he started to lower his voice, taking his call farther and farther away from the door.

An Ran lies on the bed, looking at the ceiling. The Mo Fei tonight was unfamiliar to her, completely different from the man six years ago.

The him from the past was warm and carried a ray of sunshine. Everytime they met he would have smile on his face, never changing expressions. Even when she turned around to leave, he was still carrying a smile. Even though it was a smile full of guilt. And the man she saw today didn’t even have an ounce of that shine from six years ago. He was scarier, that dark expression was something she’d never seen before.

Time really is like a knife, peeling away the features from before. Seeing each other again, nothing had remained the same, not even the place that they were once familiar with was the same.

What surprised her the most was that Su Yi Cheng hadn’t asked anything. She can’t read this man’s thoughts, but she’s still thankful that he hasn’t asked. Today was a mess, that even if he had asked, she wouldn’t even know where to start, how to bring it up.

Some scars, would only stop hurting when it’s healed.

Hearing his footsteps, An Ran slowly shuts her eyes, turns her body, so that her back faces the door.

Su Yi Cheng looks at her back that was facing him, quietly watching for a while. In the end he didn’t say anything, and takes some pyjamas from his armoire, then goes into the bathroom.

When Su Yi Cheng was finished bathing and had come out of the bathroom, An Ran maintained the same position, no movement at all.

He wipes his hair clean, then puts the towel aside. Su Yi Cheng lifts the quilt and lies down beside her. He turns off the lamp. In the dark, as always, he reaches out to her and brings her to his embrace, so that her back is lying against his chest. His chin, gently rests against her hair. He cirlces his arm around her waist, wrapping around her stomach. He takes her hand, entwining their fingers together.

He hears her breath quickening, and her body becoming unnaturally stiff. In the dark, he pulls up the cozy silk quilt. He grabs her body closer to his chest, so that she is sticking even closer to him. He lowers his head and kisses the top of her head, whispering, “Sleep….!”

In the dark with her back facing him, An Ran opens her eyes, squeezes his hand that was entwined with hers, then closes her eyes once again.

Not too long after, with the room being illuminated by the faint moon, the breathing rate slowly becomes even, weak, and far apart.

Su Yi Cheng, who was holding An Ran, slowly starts to smile. Now he’s certain that she had already fallen asleep, and not pretending.

Then, holding her frail body, Su Yi Cheng also slowly closes his eyes, falling asleep with her. His breathing matches her breathing. Throughout the night there was that kind of interesting rhythm.
