060. Strange provocation
On Monday, An Ran was in the office rushing herself to finish the blueprints to the city hall building. The cellphone on her desk didn’t give any warning as it started to ring, scaring An Ran out of her concentrated state. She pats herself over her chest.
She grabs the cellphone. It was an unfamiliar number. She hesitated, but still answered.
“Hello?” An Ran used her shoulder to hold the phone in place, while she went back to working on her blueprint. The design was due on Wednesday, and it was already Monday. The blueprint was only a third of the way complete, so she really needs to push herself for the next few days.
“Ms. Gu?” A pleasant female’s voice starts speaking. The voice was gentle, and especially soft. Listening to it makes one feel at ease.
An Ran stops her pen, and puts it aside. She takes the phone back into her hands again, and looks at the screen. She’s certain that she doesn’t know this number, so she speaks into the phone, “And you are?”
The person on the other line chuckles, “Hehe, you don’t know me. But I know you. Ms. Gu, are you interested in having coffee with me?”
Hearing her words An Ran frowns even more. She’s not used to going out for coffee with strangers, “I’m sorry, I don't go for coffee with strangers.” Sitting together with an unfamiliar person and having coffee, what kind of situation is that?
“Perhaps Ms. Gu may not know who I am, but I believe that you definitely know who my husband is.” The person on the other lines says.
An Ran doesn’t crease her brow. Listening to her words made her even more suspicious, “I don’t quite get what you’re trying to say.”
“Mo Fei.” The person on the other line spits out those two words. Then she laughs delicately, and says, “Mo Fei is my husband. I am Tong Xiaojie.”
An Ran stiffens. She never would have thought that it would be Tong Xiaojie. She actually does know her. Ever since the start of university, she was beautiful, and she was the school’s beauty. She majored in the arts, and embodied a unique artistic personality, very pretty. When they were in school she liked to wear white clothing, appearing ethereal, as if she wasn’t from earth. Because she was so devastatingly beautiful, and came from a distinguished family, during their time in school, her pursuers were always abundant. They weren’t disruptive, but throughout their four years, she has never heard of her getting into a relationship. It didn’t matter if the men that went after her were handsome, or if they were rich, she rejected them all. Throughout the four years, she has never heard of her even going out with a male student.
In fact, about these matters of popular students in school, An Ran has also heard of it, even though she has never talked to them. The reason she knows of her, and has a deep impression of her, is entirely because of Mo Fei. The day before their graduation, the school was suddenly talking about how Tong Xiaojie and a student from the architecture department had walked closely together, and that one person even saw that they were holding hands as they entered the school gates, cheerful and lively. At that time An Ran was busy with her internship, so she never cared about these rumours. During that time, because her internship was related to her studies, she wasn’t able to see Mo Fei very much. When everyone had confirmed that the guy in the rumour was indeed architect major’s Mo Fei, they had already established their relationship as boyfriend and girlfriend. When An Ran had sought out Mo Fei to question him, Mo Fei didn’t say anything. He could only bow his head to her and apologize.
When that happened An Ran could only feel that it was inconceivable, and even found it ridiculous. They loved each other for 4 years, and her graduation gift was a break up. Not only did he two-time her, all that talk about his dreams as he held her, saying that life is but a fleeting horizon, was distant and fake. She asked for an explanation, and he could only force a smile, not even saying a word. They were just sitting at a coffee shop near campus for the entire afternoon, not one word was even exchanged. In the end An Ran could only laugh bitterly and turn around, but the moment she turned, tears had started to pour. Walking home from school, for an hour during that journey, her tears never stopped. When she arrived home her mother had asked in concern about what had happened, as it was obvious that she was feeling awfully wronged, but she wasn’t able to say a word. She could only weep and lock herself in her room, as her parents were calling her, but she didn’t let either of them in.
In the end, the day before their commencement, she had heard from a classmate that Mo Fei had gone abroad to study, and left with Tong Xiaojie, to France. Along with this news, Mo Fei had left behind a letter. In it contained everything that they had shared. His penmanship was delicate, much more detailed than what An Ran was used to. Aside from the little details of their time spent together, he also wrote about his ambitions. He wanted success, longed for success, and this society is one that is only beneficial to certain people's interest, where abilities will always be behind privilege. He said he didn’t love Tong Xiaojie, but he couldn’t reject her, because he longs for success, and the privilege that came with Tong Xiaojie, is exactly the kind that he was longing for. For that reason, he betrayed their love. Everything was a helpless act, yet was also dreadful.
“Ms. Gu? Are you still there?” Not getting an answer, Tong Xiaojie probes a call.
An Ran then comes back from her memories, and unconsciously tightens her grip on her phone, saying, “Yes.”
“Then do you want to meet me?” Tong Xiaojie asks, her tone still excessively pleasant.
An Ran closes her eyes, firmly declining, “I don’t see the need. I do know Mo Fei, but that’s only because we were schoolmates, that’s all.”
“Hehe.” Tong Xiaojie chuckles. “Someone sent me an interesting picture, and also attached your number to it.”
“Picture? What picture?” An Ran was puzzled, where did this picture come from? And who sent it?
“How about this, Ms. Gu, I think that we should meet. I don’t care what your intentions are towards Mo Fei, I still have something to say to you. Of course, before that, I think I owe you an apology. Because of my meddling, you and Mo Fei ended your relationship. For that, I’m sorry.”
“There’s no need for that. If you really have something to say, then you can just say it over the phone.” An Ran declines again. She doesn’t want to bring up her and Mo Fei again, from now on, she has her own life.
“Are you scared, Ms. Gu?” She chuckles, and says, “I don’t bite. What do you have to worry about, Ms. Gu. It’s just a cup of coffee.”
“I just am not used to going out with someone I don’t know, someone I’m not comfortable with, and drinking tea with them to chat.” An Ran says simply, not leaving any margin for error.
“Hehe.” Tong Xiaojie chuckles, and only says, “It actually isn’t anything, I just wanted to call Ms. Gu out just to say one thing: Regarding Mo Fei, I’m not going to let him go.”
An Ran has no interest in what she wants to say, and what her intentions were, she already had idea of what it was from the start, “Your marriage, has nothing to do with me.”
“Ah ha, I just want Ms. Gu to remember my words today.” Tong Xiaojie says, her tone becoming cold instantly.
“Then I ask Ms. Tong that you take good care of your own man, I don’t want to be disturbed.” An Ran’s voice also turns pointed. Now what does it look like, it looks as if she was the one who is wrecking havoc to their marriage.
Tong Xiaojie coldly says, “Thanks for reminding me, Ms. Gu. I will.” After speaking, she simply ends the call.
An Ran, feeling indignant, throws her phone on the desk, what the hell is this!

First Marriage Then Love 《先婚厚爱》Chapter 59 Translation
059. Midnight call
By the time Su Yi Cheng had reached home it was nearly midnight. He had a meal with the staff from the municipal committee and with a few entrepreneurs from Tongjiang city. Everyone was a frequent visitor of that restaurant. They drank while they ate, chatted about any topic that came to mind, about the economy, the state of affairs, they even talked about women. Thus, the time went by really quickly. By the time the people had scattered off it was already midnight.
Still wearing the scent of alcohol, he enters the apartment. Outside, a dusky lamp was still left on. Su Yi Cheng looks at it distractedly, and slowly starts to smile. In the past he had always come home to a dark room. Now, knowing that there’s a small lamp outside the door, he knows that in his room there is someone who is waiting for him. This kind of feeling, really isn’t so bad.
He places his briefcase on the sofa in the living room, and proceeds to open the door to the bedroom. The room was pitch-black, and the bed was void of the woman that was supposed to be asleep on it. Confused, he frowns, and withdraws from the room. He sees light escaping from the cracks of the door from the study room. The corner of his lips slowly rises up. He walks over towards the study room, and pushes the door open, only to see a certain someone resting on the desk, sleeping soundly. The blueprint was acting as a pillow, a pencil is still in her grasp.
Su Yi Cheng chuckles and shakes his head. He carefully slips off the pencil from her grasp, puts it aside, and slowly pulls the chair back. He stoops down to carry her. This action, An Ran wasn’t woken up by it at all. Apparently she was really tired, finding his embrace to be cozy, sleeping soundly.
He carries her back into the bedroom. After placing her safely onto the bed, Su Yi Cheng then goes back to the study room, and tidies up the blueprint and material on the desk. He can see that she was half way done with her blueprint. He couldn’t help but peek at it a little longer. The design looked quite unique, the building, was dignified and wasn’t lacking in trendiness at all. He hasn’t a clue whether or not the design was good or not, after all, regarding construction, he is just a layman.
After tidying everything up for her, Su Yi Cheng finally returns to the bedroom to wash up and change into his pyjamas. He then goes into the bathroom. When he came out from the bathroom, he sees the figure on the bed dazedly opening her eyes, rubbing the haziness from her sleepy eyes. She stares at him for while until she finally recognizes him, and yawns as she says, “You’re back.”
“Yeah.”
She nods dazedly, and gets up.
“Where are you going?” Seeing her appearance, Su Yi Cheng asks jokingly.
“Bath.” Saying that she goes over the wardrobe and takes out a pair of pyjamas, not really looking like she was ready to go into the bathroom.
An Ran couldn’t see clearly, while Su Yi Cheng, who was standing next to her, could. He can see the pair of clothes that she had in her hand, and he couldn’t help but gulp, and asks, “An Ran, you, you’re really thinking of wearing that?”
An Ran was confused from the question. She stands there blankly for a while, then looks down at the clothes in her hand. Then, she finally sees through the haze of her sleepiness. Her cheeks immediately goes red. Heavens, how could she grab the pair of clothes that Lin Li had bought for her. She quickly throws them back into the wardrobe, and grabs her normal pyjamas and dashes into the bathroom without taking a glance at him. She couldn’t help but remind herself, that when tomorrow comes, she definitely, must take that disastrous thing and throw it into the trash.
Su Yi Cheng laughs at her childish action, shakes his head and goes back to bed. He takes a magazine from the bedside cabinet and opens it. At this time, the phone beside the bed starts to ring. Su Yi Cheng looks at the caller ID, and sees that it is an unknown number. He frowns, not understanding who could call in this late at night, but still he answers the call, “Hello, who is it?”
The caller on the other side stays silent, for a long time.
Su Yi Cheng frowns even more, and coldly says, “Speak.”
The caller on the other side still hasn’t spoken, but it isn’t the same silence as before either. This time, there was a muffled cry. It was a woman’s cry.
Su Yi Cheng recognizes this sound. There was a long period of time, when this voice was inseparable from him. But that was the past, and it has nothing to do with him now.
Su Yi Cheng doesn’t say anything, and was about to hang up the call, but right at that moment, the voice on the other side starts to speak, apparently knowing that he was about to hang up. She quickly utters, “Yi Cheng, don’t hang up. It’s me.”
“Do you have business with me.” Su Yi Cheng asks expressionlessly, his tone void of any warmth or emotion.
“Yi Cheng, I, I’m back.” Ling Ran says desolately.
“Yeah.” Su Yi Cheng simply responds. She’s back, and he doesn’t care at all. Because to him, she is insignificant.
“Yi Cheng, we, could we find a time to meet up?” Ling Ran asks, her tone almost begging.
“No need.” Su Yi Cheng declines. He can hear that the water has stopped running in the bathroom, and knows that An Ran is pretty much almost done. He doesn’t want to create an unnecessary misunderstanding with her thanks to this call, so he simply says, “Sorry, it’s pretty late. I don’t want your call to create any misunderstandings with my wife, so let’s finish this. Bye.” After speaking, he doesn’t wait for her reply, and decisively ends the call.
An Ran rubs her hair as she comes out, and sees that he’s still sitting on the bed, not asleep, so she asks, “Why are you still up?”
Su Yi Cheng smiles at her, and just says, “I’m waiting for you.”
An Ran’s face flushes red, not knowing if it was because of the bath that she just took earlier or if it was because of his words. She turns her head and avoids his gaze, absentmindedly rubbing her hair, and walks over to the other side of the bed. She has her back to him, her eyes closed, and only wishes that he would hurry up and go to sleep.
Su Yi Cheng laughs, and closes the lamp behind her and lies down. He hugs her from behind, and entangles all ten of his fingers with hers. He had grown used to sleeping alone, and had once thought that it would take some time to get used to sleeping with someone else. However, holding her like this felt too great. Now, if he doesn’t hold her every night, it would feel out of place.
“I, I have a meeting early morning tomorrow, c-can’t be late.” Her back still against him, she can only stutter that out.
Su Yi Cheng buries his head into her shoulders and muffles a laugh. How scary is he to her, all he wanted to do is just hold her.
“I, I’m tired, g-going to sleep first.” Seeing that he is only laughing in response, An Ran quickly made her position clear. She was really afraid of this man, and she really needs to get this husband and wife obligations adjusted, otherwise, she’s going to die getting tossed around by him.
Still laughing, a while later, Su Yi Cheng finally softly says, “Go sleep. I just want to hold you.”
Hearing that, An Ran finally feels relieved. She closes her eyes, falling asleep in his embrace like always.
Su Yi Cheng watches the sprinkle of moonlight peeking in through the window. In the dark the room felt calm, only her breathing can be heard. He places a kiss on the crown of her head, closes his eyes, and falls into the rhythm of her breathing.
By the time Su Yi Cheng had reached home it was nearly midnight. He had a meal with the staff from the municipal committee and with a few entrepreneurs from Tongjiang city. First Marriage Then Love 《先婚厚爱》Chapter 58 Translation
058. Cold calls
Having someone with you, taking a stroll is actually quite a small happiness. The normally dull and slow time will go by in an instant. In fact, they didn’t walk that quickly, and the walk that would normally take half an hour, became 50 mins. However, since there were two of them, it didn’t feel like that much time went by.
Su Yi Cheng opens the door to go in. An Ran twists her neck. Once they entered she started to suddenly feel tired. She takes off her shoes, throws her bag on the sofa, and plants herself to the sofa. Someone from behind hits the back of her head, giving her vertigo. She was already caught mid-air.
“Ah!....”
An Ran cries out belatedly, instinctively reaching out to grab hold of Su Yi Cheng’s neck. She stares at him in shock, “You, what are you doing?”
Su Yi Cheng smiles evilly, and takes the chance to put his lips to her ears, and charmingly whispers, “I thought I should do something, so that you’ll remember that I’m your husband, and not your brother.”
An Ran had a bad premonition, and puts her hand between their bodies, smiling awkwardly, “I-I-I-I already know that you’re my husband, my super cool and super handsome husband.”
Su Yi Cheng shakes his head, and says seriously, “You think Song Seung-hun is more handsome.”
“N-no, actually I think Jang Dong-gun is much more attractive!” An Ran firmly states her position.
Su Yi Cheng laughs, “Really, in your heart I thought that I would be more attractive than those to two.”
An Ran had always felt that his smile was weird. It harbours too much evil intention. She bites her lips, and asks, “Um, then can I-can I change my mind now?”
Su Yi Cheng gives her an evil grin, lowers his head and sucks on her lip. He speaks into her lips, “Too late.”
For the entire night An Ran was tossed around, and in her heart his personal charms was off the roof, even so much that it overshadowed his maleness. When he was satisfied he lets her go, so she can close her eyes and sleep.
By the time An Ran had woken up it was already the next day. There was no one beside her, and the warmth of the spot beside her was gone. Usually around this time An Ran would feel anger and injustice, over why there’s such a disparity between a man’s strength and a woman’s strength. She struggled all night, and even in the morning she couldn’t go sleep, couldn’t wake up refreshed and on time. Obviously they’re the one doing more exercise!
An Ran lies down with her eyes open for 5 minutes, until she protested. Then she realized that it was past noon. She remembered that she still only has a rough draft, and miserably pulls herself to sit up. That movement made her muscle cramp, and she flops back down again onto the bed. An Ran stares at the ceiling, cursing at Su Yi Cheng a few times in her mind.
She drags her incredibly sore body into the washroom to take a quick bath, and comes out changed, only to hear that the phone in the room ring. An Ran picks it up on the way, “Hello, who is it?”
The other person on the line doesn’t answer, but she was certain there was someone on the other line, because she can hear that person’s breathing. It was somewhat hurried, as if the person was unstable.
Seeing that the other person isn’t answering, An Ran asks once again, “Hello, who is it?”
She can only hear the deep breaths of the person on the other line, then she finally hears a soft, gentle feminine voice, “I’m looking for Yi Cheng, is he there, may I ask?”
“Su Yi Cheng has already left for work, why don’t you---“ As An Ran was about to give Su Yi Cheng’s number to her, she suddenly thought of his status, and starts to think that this might not be appropriate. She quickly corrects herself, “Are you looking for him at some place? Is there business? I can pass on the message if it’s suitable.”
The person on the other line turns silent for a while, then chuckles. She softly says, “I’m Ling, I don’t want to trouble you. Just tell him, that I’m back.”
Hearing that, An Ran was a bit shocked, and immediately nods her head. When she finished nodding she realized that she was on the phone, and the other person won't be able to see it. Then she quickly says, “Alright, is there anything else you want me to pass on?”
The other line goes silent again, then finally says, “Anything else…? There is… Tell him that I missed him.”
Hearing that, An Ran started to feel off, she started to feel something indescribable. But she still nods and responds, saying, “Alright, I got it.”
When she hung up, An Ran sat on the bed blankly. She didn’t know who that woman was just now, but hearing her tone, she can tell that the relationship between her and Su Yi Cheng wasn’t a simple one. Could it be an ex?
As she was thinking about it, the phone in her bag that was placed in the living room starts to ring. An Ran quickly runs to get her cell phone. It was a call from Su Yi Cheng. She answers it.
“You up yet?” On the other side, Su Yi Cheng’s voice was carrying somewhat of a mocking tone.
An Ran’s face couldn’t help but turn red. She wasn’t in the mood, and was a bit pissed. “Isn’t it your fault.” It was only a harmless prank, but he suddenly….. Also, his morning exercises are bearing fruit; his physical strength is just astonishing. Maybe one day she will join him, so that she can catch up to him in physical strength, or at the least she won’t be tired to death.
On the other line Su Yi Cheng chuckles, but didn’t forget the purpose of his call. He asks in concern, “Have you eaten breakfast yet? I made a sandwich and put it in the fridge, remember to warm it up to eat.”
“Ok.” Hearing that An Ran turns around and goes towards the kitchen. She opens the fridge and there really is a simple sandwich inside it. She suddenly felt this warmth and sweetness in her chest.
“Were you on the phone just now?” He had called the home phone earlier, and didn’t expect it to be busy.
“Oh yeah, there was a woman who called the home phone. I’m supposed to pass on her message.” Speaking of that, An Ran recalled that phone call.
“Woman? What message?” If it were a friend, they would have called his cell. Rarely would they call his home. If it wasn’t a friend, how would a stranger know his home phone?
“She said she was Ling, and told me to pass on the message that she was back. Also, she wants to meet with you.” An Ran carries her message to Su Yi Cheng. The mission can be considered completed.
On the other line Su Yi Cheng suddenly went silent, and doesn’t respond for a very long time.
“Su Yi Cheng?” An Ran calls out. “You, you still there?” She can sense what his reaction was. It was probably what she thought it was. This woman called Ling, to him, should be someone who was special.
“Yeah.” Su Yi Cheng replies. “I got it. I called to let you know that there might be a work dinner tonight, and I probably won’t be able to come home early. Remember to make something for yourself, and don’t wait for me.”
An Ran nods her head, “Ok.” Because of his silence earlier she still felt uneasy. “If there’s nothing else then I guess I’ll hang up first.”
“An Ran.” Su Yi Cheng calls out to her.
“Yeah?”
“She was a friend of mine a long time ago, but because of something, we haven’t contacted each other in a very long time.” Su Yi Cheng starts to speak, at last explaining it.
An Ran spaces out, muttering, “Why are you tell me this…..” She looks down towards her slippers. It was something Su Yi Cheng had bought for her on the second day she moved in. It was pink, and had a kitty cat on the top. It was cute.
Su Yi Cheng chuckles. “I was afraid your imagination would run wild.”
“I, I’m not that bored.” An Ran couldn’t admit that she was just silently cursing him just then, but seeing him explain it that way, kinda felt like she was peeking into his secrets. She quickly says, “I, I’m going to eat the sandwich, after that I have to work on my blueprints, I’m hanging up.” Finishing what she said, she doesn’t wait for Su Yi Cheng to reply, and quickly hangs up.
On the other side Su Yi Cheng chuckles helplessly. He thinks of the message that An Ran had just passed on. That figure slowly starts to become clear. He frowns. He doesn’t think it’s necessary for him to meet her again.

First Marriage Then Love 《先婚厚爱》Chapter 57 Translation
057. Free meal
In the end An Ran and Su Yi Cheng did not stay at Sunset town to watch the sunset. One reason was because An Ran had felt that she was humiliated, embarrassed that she was handled like that in front of all those people on the boat. Another reason was because she got a call when the boat had reached the shore. It was a call from Lin Xiao Fen, saying that it was the weekend, so An Ran and Su Yi Cheng should both come home and have a meal. What she actually wanted to say was that she was afraid that An Ran doesn’t cook, and a large man like Su Yi Cheng probably doesn’t cook either, so she was worried that these next two days, that amateur would poison their bodies.
As a result, even though they originally planned to stay at ‘Sunset town’, once they saw that it was evening they hurried to catch the last bus or else they’ll be stranded. The couple hurried to leave that beautiful golden shore, and took the two hour ride home, once again returning to Jiang city.
They didn’t head back to the apartment. It’s been a week since they’ve seen her parents, so naturally An Ran was missing them. It’s just that these past few days have been really busy, and even though she wanted to visit, she just didn’t have the energy to.
Because of old customs, Su Yi Cheng insisted, while An Ran opposed, and they finally agreed on bringing some fruits home to the Gu Household.
When An Ran and Su Yi Cheng had arrived, Lin Xiao Fen, at that time, was in the kitchen getting ready for tonight’s dinner, while Gu Heng Wen, since he didn’t have a class yesterday, was in the study doing calligraphy, freestyling in a grand emotion.
Seeing that they’ve arrived, Lin Xiao Fen and Gu Heng Wen were truly happy. The four of them sit down and chat for a while. In fact, the topics were just insignificant things, only to drag out a conversation. Naturally Lin Xiao Fen called them over today so that they could have a good meal, but she also had another purpose in mind. Even though the couple said that for now, the wedding isn’t going to happen, but to these old parents, it’s still necessary to seize the moment and experience it once.
Su Yi Cheng nods, and only says that he will arrange it around Gu Heng Wen’s academic work, and he will take care of the location and everything else.
Lin Xiao Fen and Gu Heng Wen are traditional, and said that they got an expert to pick out a date, according to the Lunar calendar, Friday March 28 is a good day, good for marriage, good for settling down. Even though they haven’t prepared for a ceremony, but still, having two families meet each other is a prudent issue. So if Su Yi Cheng would ask them, if it was alright, then they could set it on a Friday, but if not, then everyone could pick another day.
When they finally realized the time, Lin Xiao Fen takes the lead and gets up, and says that dinner is almost ready. An Ran volunteers to lend a hand under instructions. Lin Xiao Fen thinks about it, certain that she wouldn’t be more of a hindrance than a help, so they go into the kitchen together. And Su Yi Cheng stays back with Gu Heng Wen in the living room to chat, the father-in-law and son-in-law not having that awkward silence. The two chat about society, current trends, politics. Gu Heng Wen thought that he had taught for too many years to comment about the current political situation, pointing out the pros and cons of each objectives, even so much that in this standpoint, regarding Su Yi Cheng’s work, even that was brought up. This was something that he hadn’t anticipated.
An Ran and Lin Xiao fen, the pair of mother and daughter, were in the kitchen preparing for tonight’s food. Lin Xiao Fen was the head chef, while An Ran was the helper.
Sitting on the stool, An Ran picks out the vegetables, pulling out the yellow strands, the stuff that insects leave behind, and carefully puts each one into the basket.
Lin Xiao Fen stood at the counter handling the yellow fish, and cut across the stomach. Then she pulled out the internal organs, and washes it clean. Finally, she made two cuts across the back of the fish. She added sliced ginger and scallion, and finally added some drops of homemade rice wine. Then she puts the fish into the pan to cook it. The smell of wine was alluring.
“How is he treating you? Good?” Being a mother, the sense of worry can never be appeased. Although she knows that for the most part he is, but she still wants to hear it from her own mouth, so that she will be more convinced.
“Mom, Su Yi cheng is great towards me. Really, don’t worry.” In fact, there isn’t anything bad to say about him. In every respect he has been taking good care of her. Except for that one thing, which seems to be the most excessively demanding.
Lin Xiao Fen nods, and asks, “Then that’s good. I can see that this Ah Cheng isn’t too bad. Oh yeah, have you met his parents yet? How are they, do they treat you well?
“Yes, we’ve met.” An Ran recalled the details of the meeting that day. Su Yi Cheng’s family treated her really well, considering their household, a rich and powerful one, but their attitudes and such towards her, really didn’t have an ounce of arrogance, as if she really was regarded as a part of the family. She couldn’t help but sigh at her fortune.
“From what you told us, the Su family is considered an official household. Yi Cheng is also a golden child…They really don’t care about family status?” She had thought that An Ran had married into an ordinary family. She never would have thought that she had married into a rich one, and that inevitably made her worried. That kind of household probably naturally has standards, what if An Ran doesn’t meet them, then what’s to be done!
“Mom.” An Ran gets up, and walks to her mother’s side. She naturally knows what her mom is worried about, “The Su family are all very nice, regarding family status and all that, as a matter of fact, is something they don’t care about. When we met that day, they mentioned many times that they want meet you and dad. They aren’t in any way that kind of snobbish, arrogant people.”
“Really?” Lin Xiao Fen still wasn’t convinced, because she had experienced it, so she knows these so-called rich and powerful households, their so-called standards. Not only do you have to withstand that kind of manner, that kind of ‘sitting on a throne’ attitude.
“Really. Seriously. Once you meet them you’ll understand. My husband really isn’t the kind of person you’re thinking about.” An Ran lies.
Hearing her say that, Lin Xiao Fen finally nods her head and believes her words.
By the time the mother-daughter pair emerged from the kitchen it was almost 9 o’clock. They ate until they were bursting, and after dinner they continued to eat the fruits that the couple had brought. Their stomachs really were almost bursting. It was late and they still haven’t left. Because their stomachs were too full, the couple decided to take a stroll along the street in the direction of their apartment rather than calling a taxi.
The night scene wouldn’t be considered beautiful. There wasn’t moonlight, and there were very few stars. There were only some hovering clouds. The entire night sky seemed to look even more vast and lonely.
Eight or nine o’clock is when the night life of Jiang city begins. The flickering rainbow of street lights and the pedestrians were not few, but most of them were youngsters. An Ran and Su Yi Cheng were among these people, hand-in-hand.
Her hand being held by his large ones, wasn’t awkward at all. All seemed to fit, as if things should be this way. In fact, if one really thinks about it, they haven’t known each other long. Since the marriage until now, not even half a month has passed. There were some things that progressed too quickly, but it didn’t seem sudden at all.
An Ran let him lead her forward, eyes looking ahead on the road. On the corner of her mouth is a faint smile. About this marriage, she truly thinks that she is fortunate.
In the end An Ran and Su Yi Cheng did not stay at Sunset town to watch the sunset. First Marriage Then Love 《先婚厚爱》Chapter 56 Translation
056 Sunset town 2
It’s not a public holiday, but it was the start of the weekend vacation, and the spacious sandy shore wasn’t lacking in tourists. Of course, most the crowd consisted of youngsters. Lin Cheng city’s large troupe of white collar workers had taken the advantage of the weekend to come and release all the pressures and worries of work.
The two of them weren’t big partiers, and only walked along the shore, or stood by the shore to welcome the waves, feeling the sand underneath their feet or the fast coming and going of the tide. The tide wasn’t so big today, the waves weren’t that high. Although to another who would want to tease their partner probably wouldn’t find the conditions today that fun, but to Su Yi Cheng and An Ran, the wind and tide, was just right, very comfortable.
By midday they were both by a seafood restaurant, which served the local’s freshest seafood, and the culinary talent was exceptional. Each and every dish that was served was absolutely delicious, and perhaps this had something to do with the live seafood.
After lunch, the couple follows a crowd and sit on a small boat that set out to the sea. The boat was actually very slow, and it didn’t look very nice or interesting, but sitting there, one can feel the breeze, smell the ocean.
The couple sit beside each other, not saying anything, but occasionally looks at the other, giving a small smile, not saying anything.
The small boat was turning back, when suddenly a female student told them to come over, eyes fixated on Su Yi Cheng, wearing a bashful expression. She takes a deep breath, as if she was gathering a good amount of courage, then she finally says, “Um, um can, can I get a picture with you?”
An Ran and Su Yi Cheng were caught off guard, and look at each other incredulously. Then, simultaneously, they turn to look at the female student.
In response, the female student quickly explains, “Um, don’t misunderstand, actually, actually I just feel like you really look like a star from Korea, so, so I wanted to see if I could get you to pose for a photo, th-there’s no other meaning.”
Another female student also quickly steps up, agreeing, “Yeah, yeah! He kind of looks like Jang Dong-gun. We’re both big fans, so we wondered if we could take a picture with him.” She turns to look at An Ran and asks, “Does jie jie mind?”
An Ran was caught off guard with the question, and was even more embarrassed being called jie jie. Women really are conscious of their age, especially when in front of younger women. In that situation she was even more conscious of it. She turns to look at Su Yi Cheng, only to see him facing her and, surprisingly, wearing a smile. About the picture, he doesn’t really mind at all, especially since it’s just for fun. Seeing that, An Ran felt this kind of indescribable uneasiness, glancing at him, peeved, as if grumbling about how his love affair is too much.
Seeing An Ran speechless, the female student beside her asks again, “Jie jie can’t be that stingy right? It’s actually nothing much, just a picture that’s all.” An Ran turns her head, and looks at her. Then she puts on a smile, and shakes her head, her tone affirmative, “Of course I don’t mind, it’s just a picture. Besides, my brother’s this popular and has a celebrity face, it’s a given that I’m happy.”
“He’s not your boyfriend?”
“He’s not your boyfriend?”
The two female students ask at the same time.
Actually the two of them had noticed him before he had gotten on the boat, because he was so outstanding. It’s not just the appearance, but also his manners, in the midst of a crowd, he stands out, just a glance into the crowd can make anyone pick him out. Seeing them get on the small boat, they didn’t think too much of it and followed them on. Actually in their eyes the couple was quite well-suited, the man was handsome and the woman was beautiful, and they noticed that the man was holding her by the hand. Even though they weren’t excessively intimate or aggressive, but any person with working eyes could see that they were lovers.
But what did this woman say, he was her brother? They weren’t lovers, but brother and sister?
“You two, are brother and sister?” Even though the person herself said it, but the female students nevertheless, were not convinced. Could brother and sisters now be in a good mood and hold hand in hand?
Hearing that, An Ran turns to look at Su Yi Cheng, only to see him frowning, displeased. Looking at her, his eyes look like they’re dissatisfied and blaming. Seeing him like that, An Ran felt like becoming the bad egg, and smiles at him like a spoiled brat. She turns to the two girls and says seriously, “Yeah, He’s my older brother. I have a boyfriend, and my boyfriend’s more handsome than him.” Saying that, An Ran’s brain suddenly thought of something, feigning surprise, “Oh right, also looks like a famous Korean star, Song Seung-hun, you guys know of Song Seung-hun right? Everybody says that he looks like Song Seung-hun.”
“Really?”
“Really?”
Again, speaking at the same time, An Ran thought to herself, these two girls might be university students, and it was okay being that simple and cute, being swayed by her, unexpectedly believing it.
Resisting a smile, An Ran nods her head expressionlessly, “Of course it’s true.”
The two female students look at her, their eyes having this expression of envy and jealously.
“So jealous of you, I also really like Song Seung-hun.”
“Uh, me too.”
An Ran looks at the two girls with an annoyed expression, but in reality she really wanted to laugh. As she was thinking about letting out that laugh, Su Yi Cheng beside her suddenly uses force on her, pulling her into his chest. Then, not giving An Ran a chance to react, he dips his head and accurately lands a kiss on her red lips, as if it was a punishment. Su Yi Cheng’s kiss wasn’t gentle like the usual, his kiss today was coarse and wild, rough, and punishing.
As a punishment he bit her soft lips. Su Yi Cheng detaches himself from her lips and asks, “When did I say I was okay being your brother? Huh?”
An Ran then understood what it meant by ‘eating one’s own bitter fruit’, ‘a hundred mouths but none who dispute, there are mouths but hard to to speak’. She reaches out and pushes him, but wasn’t able to move him. When she was about to explain and deny, but right at that moment he takes that opportunity to drown out her attempts to make peace.
An Ran felt like after half of a century later, when she was almost dying of suffocation, Su Yi Cheng finally releases her. Holding her as she attempts to catch her breath, but he doesn’t forget to say, “Next time, next time do you dare to talk rubbish?”
Don’t even talk about the next time, right now she was already regretting it immensely. She doesn’t even dare to raise her head, burying herself into his stomach and desperately shakes her head. Really was utterly humiliating, at least this wasn’t Jiang city, and there wasn’t anyone around that they know. Otherwise, digging a ten feet hole wouldn’t be enough for her make her way out.
While at the side, the two girls were standing there and gaping at them, staring at them with large eyes, unable to utter a word.
Su Yi Cheng looks at the An Ran in his chest, and he was really in a good, fun mood. He raises his head and looks at the two girls at the side, gives them a smile and nods,“Sorry, my wife likes to joke around. Hope you guys don’t mind. And about that picture, I think it’s better not to. My wife’s a bucket of jealousy, and I don’t want to sleep on the sofa when we get home.”
In Su Yi Cheng’s embrace, An Ran mutters, “I am definitely not jealous.”
It’s not a public holiday, but it was the start of the weekend vacation, and the spacious sandy shore wasn’t lacking in tourists. Of course, most the crowd consisted of youngsters.

First Marriage Then Love 《先婚厚爱》Chapter 55 Translation
055. Sunset town 1
After breakfast, An Ran changed out of her cozy pyjamas and went out with Su Yi Cheng. Today Su Yi Cheng is also changed out of his usual attire of Western suits. He wears a relaxed windbreaker, and khaki-coloured pants. His hair is parted haphazardly, looking a little like one of those South Korean pop stars.
In front of the door, An Ran dazedly stares at him, motionless for a while and not speaking.
Seeing her like that, Su Yi Cheng asks, “What’s up? Is there something wrong?”
An Ran shakes her head, finally choking out, “So all along my husband is actually really handsome.” Her expression was a hundred percent serious, not in the least bit mocking.
Su Yi Cheng found her serious expression and serious tone rather amusing. He lowers his head and kisses those alluring red lips, until An Ran thought that she was going to die for not breathing, that he finally let go of her. He holds her gently, wrapping his arms around her back to stroke her. He presses his lips onto her ears, and whispers, “I’ve always known that my wife was beautiful.”
An Ran turns red as a result of those teasing words of endearment. She felt this kind of sweet happiness.
Today the weather wasn’t too bad. It was sunny, but it wasn’t that hot. There was a light breeze, blowing against one’s face. It was really nice.
Su Yi Cheng doesn’t start the car, and only pulls An Ran along the sidewalk. An Ran let him lead the way, but she doesn’t get where he is taking her. She then turns to him and asks, “Where are we going?”
Su Yi Cheng laughs, but doesn’t say anything. Their apartment was at the heart of downtown, so there were a lot of bus stops. When Su Yi Cheng led her to the bus stop, An Ran then realizes that today they will be going on a trip.
“Are we going far?” She looks at the semi-long queue in front of her, asking in a small voice.
Su Yi Cheng shakes his head, “Not far.” They waited until they people in front of them leave one by one, then when it was their turn he holds out a folded bill into the window and says, “Two tickets to Sunset.”
Sunset Town is a small town subsidized by Jiang City. The sunset there is especially beautiful, thus getting the name Sunset Town.
Sunset Town is especially developed in fishery, as a result of it being close to the sea. The sun would slowly rise on top of the sea, then slowly set down again. The evening sky was always a bright red, mixed with a golden radiance. It was beautiful, pretty. In the past a photography lover had taken the opportunity to snap a photo of the beautiful sunset glow, and it was said that the photograph had won an award for a national photography competition, thus sparking it as a prosperous tourist attraction. Many people would take the trouble of traveling far only to take a look at the blazing sun, the scene of the sun slowly setting atop the surface of the sea.
Actually the trip wasn’t that far, driving would only take about 2 hours. An Ran and Su Yi Cheng’s seat was at the very back. Because they did not sleep very well last night, and had to wake up early the morning after, once they seated themselves, An Ran’s sleepiness immediately came upon her. When she finally took a seat she rested her head and slightly leaned on Su Yi Cheng, closing her eyes and falling asleep.
Su Yi Cheng looks at her and chuckles as he shakes his head. Then he adjusts her seat to a good position, so she can sleep at a more comfortable position.
In a daze An Ran could hear the hushed whispering of the person beside her. She lazily opens her eyes, only to see Su Yi Cheng sitting upright holding his cellphone, whispering into the phone about something. Hearing the content, it was probably something about work.
Seeing that she was awake, he smiles at her. Then he says a few final words to Secretary Zheng, and hangs up.
“Did I wake you up?” Su YI Cheng reaches out and brushes aside the hair on her forehead.
“You had work?” She heard him say to Secretary Zheng something about land development documents, and she knows that with the nature of his work, naturally he wouldn’t get weekends off.
“Nope.” Su Yi Cheng firmly shakes his head, then looks out the window and says, “Why don’t you sleep a bit more, we’re still about half an hour away.” An Ran shakes her head, and looks at him with guilt. She knows that it was because of yesterday’s incident that he’s taking the time to keep her company. Thinking about that, she lowers her head and says, “Actually you didn’t have to take the time off to stay with me.” Saying that, she raises her head to look at him, forces a smile, and says, “I’m okay.”
Su Yi Cheng nods, “I know. But this was my idea, so I insisted on pulling you along. Earlier in the morning Secretary Zheng said that the morning sunrise and sunset was really beautiful. He came here with his girlfriend before and took a few pictures. I saw them and thought it was beautiful. I’ve never had the time to go, and also didn’t have anyone to go with me. It’s a rare day where I have the time, and you didn’t have anything to do so you could come with me. How nice is that.”
An Ran looks at him, his expression looking innocent and as if he had stated the obvious, and she couldn’t help but laugh. However she still wasn’t quite at ease, so she asked to confirm again, “Work, really there isn’t anything important to do?”
“I’m not Ironman, of course I need to rest too.” Su Yi Cheng states the obvious.
It was exactly 10 o’clock when they reached Sunset Town. It was the first time for the both of them, so they were not familiar with this. An Ran was about to say that they should take a stroll at the coast, but since they weren’t familiar with the area, the both of them spent $5 to rent a three-wheeled vehicle. Once they took a seat, An Ran could see the social customs of this town along the way. But once they turned the corner the vehicle stops, points at the large golden sandy shore and said they were done. This was merely a one minute travel, only had turned a corner.
The two of them, on the vehicle, sat there without a reaction, and the driver thought that they weren’t planning to pay. He purposefully opens two buttons on his shirt, exposing his sun-tanned muscles, intending to scare them, “You guys didn’t bargain, and I didn’t say that you couldn’t bargain. We’re here, hurry and give me the money, I still have business to do.”
Su Yi Cheng looks on and couldn’t help but laugh, quickly raising his hand to indicate that he doesn’t have to get so worked up, and takes out five dollars from his wallet. He hands it over to the driver and says, “Da ge, thank you.” Then he alights from the vehicle himself, and helps An Ran down, and the couple walks towards the golden sandy shore.
An Ran sees that he had a smile on his face throughout the journey, and she couldn’t help but tease him, “What, is it amusing to be jilted by a person for the first time?”
Su Yi Cheng glances at her, and squeezes her hand. He jokingly replies back, “Five dollars made me realize one thing, no matter where you go, you really shouldn’t ask a driver for directions.”
An Ran laughs and glances at him, then turns around, running towards the vast sea. The last time that she had visited the seaside had been too long, it must have been way back when she was still in university and came with her schoolmates. After entering the workforce, the work was endless. She really hasn’t been to the seaside in a long time.
An Ran runs towards the vast sea, and places both hands by her mouth, yelling out to the sea, “Ah! Sea!” Then she turns around, laughing heartily, and happily reaches out to Su Yi Cheng.
Su Yi Cheng looks on towards the figure whose back was against the sunlight, ponytail flying thanks to the sea breeze, face adorning a big smile. This kind of scene was beautiful, and looking at it, made one’s heart skip a beat.
